Haws

Haws was established in 1886 in Clapton, in the East-end of London by Mr John Haws. He had been working on developing a ‘waterpot’ that had perfect balance regardless of whether the ‘pot’ was full or nearly empty. He was successful and his watering can, as it became known, began to win awards and be widely acclaimed in the gardening world. Haws make the finest watering cans and accessories for gardens and homes.

The company has been sold several times since 1886, moved locations (first to Bishop Stortford and then to Birmingham - which meant that the Haws brass medallion had to be altered each time to reflect the move), survived two world wars and financial recessions but the original design that John Haws developed has endured, almost unaltered.

Haws is now owned by the Pennock family. The whole process from individually cutting the components of each can from sheet metal through to the hand-soldering of each spout and handle to finally attaching the Genuine Haws medallion on each watering can is done by experienced crafts people in their factory in Birmingham.

Haws is a celebration of British design and engineering and of craftsmanship and embracing technology. 134 years after the first watering can was first made, they’re still being made entirely in the UK.
